TASK 01 - SKETCHBOOK-PORTFOLIO RESEARCH & DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

WEEK 1 - 4

During Week 1, we were briefed on our first task which is fabric manipulation and sampling. We were asked to create a mind map with designs that inspired us and implement unconventional materials in that design. We had started to research and find images of fabric manipulation that inspired us to interpret the 'Recycle, Repurpose and Re-imagine'.

DEFINITION OF UNCONVENTIONAL & WEARABLE ART :

The use of various materials that are normally not used in making garments and creating a fabric that is wearable. Unconventional materials include plastic, glass, ropes, sticks, balloons and many more. These materials are then manipulated together into one sample that can be designed into a garment.

RECYCLING AND UPCYCLING FASHION:

Upcycling fashion means taking clothing or accessories that are torn, stained, or damaged and converting them into wearable products. Upcycling is the process of transforming discarded materials into new products, giving them a new life and reducing waste. It promotes creativity, sustainability, and environmental consciousness. Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into reusable materials. It helps conserve natural resources, reduce pollution, and save energy. Recycling and upcycling fashion has been practiced in today's world as it helps to protect the environment.

INITIAL MIND MAP :

After doing some research which is further discussed in Task 02, I realized that my understanding of the compilation of designs was not exactly what was asked, then I simplified my mind map to a specific theme which is crochet work.

Finalized mind-map:

MY MAIN THEME: CROCHET

After experimenting with the knotting method, Mr. JR had advised me to crochet the ropes instead as it would create a better sampling. I had decided to crochet with raffia strings and a rope to complete the sample. The most common material used for crocheting is yarn or crochet thread, but it might also be fabric, wire , twine or other innovative materials. With this unconventional theme, the material chosen was raffia strings as it provides a solid base, texture and color to the design. Rafia is made from polypropylene. This material is soft and durable.

MOODBOARD:

CONCEPT INSPIRATION WRITE - UP:

Crochet is a method of creating a pattern by using thread, yarn, and other materials. It is done by looping the yarns together or as some may say it is a knotting technique. These interlocking loops remind me of family bonds that are tight, united, and together. It creates various patterns that also pictures a family in different ways. The different colors can be seen as the various emotions felt and these colors are joined together no matter what leading to an understanding and accepting environment. Each loop strengthens the crochet work and brings it together, same goes to a family bond, with every initiative taken the bond only gets tighter and stronger.

We draped our manipulations on the mannequin and from there, we had taken pictures and videos of our process. We were then given time to come up with initial ideas or sketches of our designs related to the theme. This part was very interesting and kept me motivated as my creative side came out. I got really excited and tried different techniques on the doodles. These are my final outcome.

INITIAL IDEA DEVELOPMENTS:
I was going for a more neutral tone collection as in my mind those colors really compliment our skin and has a soft feeling to it. It would help bring out my manipulation.

FINAL 2 DESIGNS:

LOOK 1

LOOK 2

INITIAL TECHNICAL DRAWING FOR LOOK 1:
This was the 1st drawing that Mr. had guided me on. The construction of this design would be complicated and time consuming, so we didn't move forward with it.

This is the design that I was trying to portray and create throughout this whole project but due to some difficulties and miscalculation which will be further explained in my final project, I decided to simplify the design further.

FINAL TECHNICAL DRAWINGS:
LOOK 1
LOOK 2

The technical drawing at the end is very different compared to our initial developments as time constraint and method of execution was a major factor. For my Look 1, there was a lot of technical problems during the construction as I didn't take into account the weight of my manipulations.
And as for Look 2, I was short on time and had to rush through the process, so I created a simple manipulation to complement both looks and to make it look like a collection.
