Task 03: E-PORTFOLIO

11th of  OCTOBER

On this day, we had an inspiring talk by Mr. Faizal and Miss Zaihani.

It was an eye-opening talk as they lectured us on how the industry is going to be when we venture out as individual designers and a sample of career paths that we can take throughout the process. They also shared about their experience and challenges they had faced in the fashion industry in Malaysia.

24th of OCTOBER

On this day, we were visited by an amazing and talented Miss Hazel Robinson from Middlesex University, London.

We were all gathered together in the mayamode to carry out a workshop organised by Miss Hazel. The workshop began with a brief introduction and a slight detail regarding the transfer programmes available in Middlesex University. She included a detailed course structure that we would be able to experience if we were to join their programme in the future.

She had also introduced us to journaling which definitely helped us in our upcoming projects. She would journal her rough ideas and sketches along with the inspirations. It was an eye-opening experience and also inspiring. She shared many stories throughout her career that brought her to what she has become today which is a successful designer.

She then introduced us to deconstruction and reconstruction. This was really inspiring as we all know that the fashion industry is one of the major polluters in today's world and a step that needs to be taken to defer from that is by introducing sustainable fashion. We were asked to provide 6 garments that we were about to give away, from there, we deconstructed them and reconstructed into something wearable.

We were separated into groups of 3. My group members consisted of me, Aleena and Joey. We gathered all of our garments and began draping it onto the mannequin to get some rough ideas.

We found a red collared shirt and fitted it onto the mannequin , then we snipped off 5 cm from the neck line all the way down. By using this as a base, we continued adding printed fabrics that suited the red theme. At this point we had a rough idea on the direction we were heading to. We then played around with other fabrics by deconstructing them and adding it onto the mannequin. We also introduced the knotting technique around the armhole area.

Since we introduced various printed fabrics into the design, we applied the concept of negative space and left a certain part of it bare to balance it out. This is the final product of our construction.

After completing the designs, we had a mini fashion show.

Miss Hazel had also given some feedback and advise regarding our designs.

Besides that, our design was chosen as the top 3 favorites along with other amazing designs.

It was an amazing and fun experience throughout this whole workshop. The 3 of us worked really well together as our aesthetics were quite similar. There were a few disagreements here and there but we overcame it with ease and produced an amazing design. We learnt a lot during this workshop as it was very hands on.

SITE VISITS

My first site visit was to Kit M Corporation. We were asked to start there as it was our main source of faux leather. From there, I bought a few sample sheets for future use as I really liked the texture of the material.

Carrana Linen

Margeret Satin Lace

Blossom Glitter Fabric

The fabrics/ materials that I chose to use in my design:

Faux Leather (Soft Skin)

Yuki Cloth.

After buying the needed materials from Kit M Corporation, I headed to Masjid Jamek. This is where we were advised by Miss Melina to get our fabrics, trimmings and other necessary sewing items.

This is where I got my cotton lining from.

I wanted to incorporate printed fabrics into my design.

We had gone to several stores to find the necessary fabrics such as cotton base, organza and many more. We also made a stop at Bunga Reben to get threads and fastenings like buckles and snap buttons.
