FINAL PROJECT: VISUAL ANALYSIS

RECAP:

During Week 2 to Week 4, we managed to complete our first project which was creating a self-portrait. We were briefed on our final project on Week 4. We are assigned to pick a goal from United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) and create a design related to it. The goal that I have chosen is Goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing.

GOAL 3: GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

FIGURE 1

TITLE: BE KIND TO YOUR MIND

ARTIST: @valereeplants

In a calm state of mind, one’s thoughts revert back to those of joy and tranquility. The design

(FIGURE 1) shows a girl nurturing her mind. One's mental health holds a great importance in achieving

good health and well-being. She is shown to be mentally travelling to her ‘happy place’ which is a

common method of boosting serotonin. Serotonin plays a key role in staving off anxiety and

depression. Anxiety and depression are common mental health struggles that people face. In my

opinion, mental health is a crucial factor of an individual’s well-being. (70 words)

VISUAL ANALYSIS:

Observation

This design contains a mixture of bright and dull colors intricately blended together. The different color

pallet like orange, peach, brown and green are well incorporated in the design. There is an individual

with wavy curls and smooth dark skin in the middle of the design. In this design we can see that there isa woman holding a small yellow color water can with her left hand above her head. There are simple

sticker-like designs on the water can like a sunflower, rainbow, a star and a heart. The woman is

watering the wilted flowers and leaves on her head. There are words right above the flowers. There are

swirly designs on the background which surrounds the individual. (118 words)

ANALYSIS: There is emphasis on this design as the main attraction is the mysterious individual at the center. She is holding a water can. The emphasis is on the action which is watering the flowers. The action then brings you to a repetition of the wilted flowers and leaves above the head. As you move down you could also see lines on the individual's face right below their eyes. There is implication of movement that can be seen through the water droplets above the individual's head. There is also movement that is created by the ripples of the swirly lines in the background. The position of the hand leads one's eyes to read the words 'Be Kind to Your Mind'. The design portrays a harmonious environment with a subtle nature feel to it. (117 words) INTERPRETATION:

This design was posted on an online platform called Pinterest which I had stumbled upon while looking for inspiration. The artist's name is Valeree. She is an earth enthusiast and gets her inspiration from mother nature. The design was made for those who can relate and gain motivation through it. It symbolizes an individual nurturing her mind and herself with love and care. It implores the audience to better look after their mental health. The design emphasizes to be kind to yourself as it is the power of growth and acceptance. Taking care of yourself helps you feel happy and confident, and it also sets the tone for how other people will treat you. (114 words)

VISUAL REFERENCES:

Figure 2 shows a design from the same artist as Figure 1. This helps me to understand more about the artist's designs and the concept they are going for.

Figure 3 is a design that was also done by Valeree (the artist for Figure 1 & 2). I like the colors and the simplicity of this design. The individual in the illustration radiates confidence.

I really liked the galaxy vibe of this design and it seemed very unique. The main attraction is definitely the individual at the center. There are many small details incorporated in the design.

Figure 4 is similar to the design in Figure 3 but with a more nature feel to it.

IDEA EXPLORATION :

FIGURE 7
I wanted to give a 'thriving in nature' theme to my design as compared to Figure 1 where the flowers are wilting. In my opinion, nature can be seen as an escape space for an individual from the world that is filled with technology. The nature has a calming and nurturing effect to the human mind. This would help them relax and ease of their tension. The wings represent freedom and them freeing themselves from their challenges.
(ethics chapter 7, slide 14)

FIGURE 8
Since I was going for a 'thriving in nature theme', this sketch shows an individual with a crown and the sun behind them shining. Similar to Figure 6. The shining sun symbolizes a positive future and that there is hope even if you are struggling. The crown shows that the individual has achieved a peace state of mind.

FIGURE 9
A simple sketch to picture Figure 8.

FIGURE 10
For this design, I mainly had figure 8 in mind, which had the individual as the main attraction. I went with the color green for the individual because green is known to be the color that nourishes the body and contributes to its growth. Meanwhile the color blue evokes sentiments of serenity and tranquility of an individual's mind. It is frequently thought of as a safe color that can appear classic and conservative.

FEEDBACK FROM LECTURER:

FIGURE 7
I was advised to describe the image more for the rational to give have a better understanding towards the theme of the design. This would help me to come up with more significant ideas to add in my design.

FIGURE 11

I was advised to reduce the size of the individual at the center and give a finished look to the design with the colors. Besides that, I was told to change the font for the words 'your mind' and lower the word 'nurture'.

FINAL DESIGN:

FIGURE 15
The design above employs the viewers to reach a calmer state of mind as when an individual is to look at nature or flowers, it gives a sense of tranquility and a calm mind. This helps an individual to lower stress, have a better mood, reduced risk of psychiatric disorders and even upticks in empathy and cooperation. Mental health is essential to achieve good health and well-being. In conclusion, this would lead to good health and well-being.

REFLECTION :

In the past four weeks I have taken into much consideration of the importance of an individual's well-being. For this project I have chosen UNSDG Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being. Good health is essential to all human beings as it holds the core of an individual's life. I had focused on mental health in my design as we have come to know that the generation nowadays tend to neglect it and burden themselves with heavier thoughts. This would lead them to suffer from depression, the feeling of neglect and anxiety. In my experience, I have encountered many people with similar thoughts, and they are unable to recover from it or that it would take a significant amount of time. The main reason that I chose this is because I wanted to send out a message through my design which is ' If you were to care and nurture your mind with positivity, I am sure that you would flourish eventually when the time comes. There is always hope and a solution for your difficulties'. Always put yourself first and care for yourself.

On the other hand, I am very grateful to be able to carry out this project as I was able to learn from my lecturer's advice and also from my peer's amazing designs. This proves that we can learn from our surrounding and implement it in our designs. I have applied my knowledge of design principles into my designs carefully.
