Task 01: SKETCHBOOK-PORTFOLIO RESEARCH & DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

 THEME : SCULPTURING LEATHER

We had started our first class of the semester on a good start with a brief reintroduction and a warm welcome from our lecturers.

Definitely happy to see Joey again \(^-^)/

Once we started the class, Mr.JR had briefly recapped our previous progress from semester 1 in such ways that we could improve in doing certain things. For an example for our blogs, to add more pictures videos and short explanations using the right terminology.

Without further ado, for our first task, we were given the theme; SCULPTURING LEATHER
We were briefed on our MIB. I tried to focus on a more specific subject matter of inspiration. Some of the examples were given to us was nature being flora and fauna, tragic events/incidents that had previously occurred, architectural, fashion history, movies & entertainment.

What do I see from sculpturing leather :

Sculpturing - Sculpting, in the context of meaning, often refers to the process of refining or shaping the significance or interpretation of something. Just as a sculptor chisels away at a block of stone to reveal a desired form, individuals can sculpt or refine their understanding of meaning through introspection, reflection, and personal growth. This process may involve examining one's values, beliefs, and experiences to give shape to a deeper sense of purpose or significance in life. It's a highly personal and ongoing journey for many people.

Sculpture - the art of making three-dimensional representative or abstract forms, especially by carving stone or wood or by casting metal or plaster.

Synthetic leather - also known as faux leather or artificial leather, is a man-made material designed to mimic the look and feel of genuine leather without using animal hides. It is typically created from various synthetic materials, such as polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), layered or coated onto a fabric backing. Synthetic leather can be used in a wide range of products, including clothing, upholstery, footwear, and accessories.

Advantages of synthetic leather include its often lower cost, durability, and resistance to moisture. It also provides an ethical and cruelty-free alternative to traditional leather. However, it may not have the same natural texture, breathability, or longevity as genuine leather, and its quality can vary depending on the manufacturing process and materials used.

From here, I focused my research in more towards flora and fauna. This is when I came across with avatar. The first avatar movie mainly focuses on a certain species risking their lives to protect what seemed to be important to them which is their home. Also known as Pandora. My collection is loosely based on the story of Neytiri, the female lead of this movie. The way she protected her home and the importance and sacrifices she had put into it.

STORY BOARD

Some viewers have drawn parallels between the film’s message of protecting the environment and the importance of safeguarding women’s rights and safety within their communities and societies. Neytiri, one of the main characters, is portrayed as a strong and skilled warrior, as well as a spiritual leader within her community. Neytiri’s character is often seen as a symbol of strength, resilience, and the importance of cultural preservation in the face of external threats. She represents the Na’vi’s commitment to protecting their land and way of life, which are central themes in the film. From here we can see a freedom of expression in a sense that promoting women’s freedom of speech and expression and protecting them from censorship and persecution.

In the movie "Avatar," Eywa is depicted as the spiritual and ecological deity of the Na'vi people on the planet Pandora. Eywa is a central concept in Na'vi culture and belief systems. Eywa is seen as a guiding and nurturing force that connects all living things on Pandora. It is often referred to as the "All Mother". The Na'vi believe that Eywa resides in all living organisms and is an essential part of the planet's ecosystem. This belief reinforces their deep respect for nature and their commitment to living in harmony with it.

CONCEPT STORY

Neytiri is deeply committed to preserving her culture and the environment of Pandora. She resists the human exploitation of the planet's resources and tries to educate Jake and others the importance of living in harmony with nature. This dedication to her cultural values highlights her independence of thought and her determination to protect what she believes in. She doesn't hesitate to confront the injustices committed by the human military-industrial complex on Pandora. Her determination to protect her people and the planet from exploitation showcases her strength in fighting against oppression.
With this collection, I want to merge the main female lead with the Pandoran environment showing a strong independent woman standing up for what she believes and what is right for her community. She does this while protecting and defending her home from the humans that want to use her home as a mining ground.
